One of these days I’m going to find out exactly what ‘District of Columbia’ means

January 29th, 2009

Despite a week of bitter temperatures, an icy snowstorm and an official school snow day, we fearlessly took to the icy sidewalks of Washington, DC today.

We waved hello to our new president, arriving by helicopter to the White House. Is that really him, you ask? We don’t know, but Val claims that we can just say it is.

We wore seven layers of clothing to keep warm. I have to; I’m allergic to winter.

The Lincoln Memorial is overwhelming. If your emotions don’t swell there, you’re in a coma. Even Max seemed to understand the reverent tone. I told the kids to pose for a picture and Max (in all seriousness) struck this pose—a tribute to the Statue of Liberty.

Max became fixated on the Washington Monument. He says it’s where America lives.

And like our man Barack, we found time to bring a little change to the White House.

Arlington National Cemetary. There is not a picture that could give justice to this place, to show the massive scope or the tangible emotion there. But this one that Ryan took is pretty freaking cool.

I love my country.

I love my country too! Thanks for the amazing pictures, and thanks for bringing change to the White House.

By the way, I think you were mistaken. That’s not a WWII memorial, it’s a memorial to the sacrifices of ENT’s. Well, at least that’s what I read.

these are some amazing photos! I love Max’s statue of liberty pose.

  3. OK. I have made three trips to DC and have seen all those things you saw. I must compliment you on your crazy photo skills! What wonderful pictures!! I’m truly jealous of the way you captured those American icons. Secondly, I completely agree that Lincoln in overwhelming. It’s my second favorite part of DC. Thirdly, I;m with Max on the monument. It is by far the most intriguing and my #1 favorite part of DC. And D, love that you brought some change to the White House! Every little bit helps. ;)

Great photos. I don’t know how we are going to see everything we want to when we visit. We will have to space it out between multiple visits I think.

Great pictures. Really good. I agree with Jesse. There is so much history to soak up.
It was really fun chatting with Christian on your return drive. Hope he got his essay done.

Great photos! I love DC. Were there three helicopters in the air? That’s when you know it’s the President. Srsly.

Very cool. D.C. is a very powerful place, for sure. It was my closest temple growing up in Detroit (until they built Chicago), so we took a couple of temple trips there. so beautiful. Wait until spring…you’ll die of gorgeousness.

Arlington is amazing. I went there with Annie when I was 16. It was my favorite part. You are right words and pics cannot express the magnitude of emotion you feel there. Thanks for jogging my dusty memories. It was fun to reminisce.

I love DC – it is my most favorite city in the whole world.

And the Lincoln Memorial is my favorite too.

I love how his hands are in the sign language A and L.

    Good stuff.
