As is generally the case with me, if I’m not on to a trend from the very beginning, I am WAY behind. There is no middle ground with me. (See: Tiffany buys first cell phone at age 26, saw Titanic on video, still does not own an iPod, etc..)
So, because I didn’t see the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy, nor the second or seventeenth, I figured it would be one of those things I would never know about. Like hair extensions. And beer.
For one thing, I had been on the original ER wagon, back when the stories were more about the patients than about the love lives of the increasingly beautiful cast. It still shocks me to see ER commercials, since I keep assuming that the show was cancelled at least three years ago. I was in diapers when that show began. And Uncle Jesse is now a doctor? Come ooooooon.
But, thanks to the current (albeit not new) trend of renting or buying entire seasons of a TV show on DVD, (which, again, I caught on to quite late) I can catch up on all of the water cooler chatter regarding Meredith and McDreamy. Except that I no longer work near a water cooler. And everybody who likes the show is six seasons ahead of me.
But, I have a plan for that, too.
Every Thursday, I TiVo the current episode and watch it while waiting for the next season to arrive by mail. Currently, I know the beginning of the stories and the end, with a ginormous gap in the middle. It’s like having TV amnesia, but eventually the two sides will converge and I will be televisionally complete.
For those of you who are avid watchers, here are some of my comments while watching the first (and current) season:
“Ohhhh, I get it. Meredith Grey. Grey’s anatomy!”
“Oh my gosh, it’s that girl from My Father the Hero!”
“Huh? Those two ended up together?”
“Huh? He’s not gay?”
(a couple weeks later)
“Ohhh. He’s gay in real life.”
“Oh. They call him ‘McDreamy’ on the show?”

I bet you can’t wait until my future post about the wonders of indoor plumbing.
Oh Tiff…I’m so excited for you to catch up. I didn’t start watching until season 2. During season 1, everyone at work was watching, so they would always talk about it. So, when I moved to AZ and didn’t have friends and had lots of time, I decided to catch up and rent season 1 and 2….best thing I could have done. I watched so many episodes, I felt like I was on the show. So…if you need someone to talk to about the show…I’m your girl. Call me.
This is one show I have actually watched from the premier episode – with some gaps. My friend Ruby is obsessed and this past weekend she kept claiming our friend Joo is like Sandra Oh’s character and that I am somehow like Meredith – but she insisted not the whiny part. Not sure how I feel about being self-centered and slutty. I think I’d rather be Izzy. . . glad you’re catching up.
Dumb show. Dumb dumb show.
yes. dumb show, they are all dumb. but they have a seriously talented music director.
i missed the first and second season, i got caught up with netflix during the summer when i was dying (ha ha) from morning sickness. so everytime i hear the theme song i get a little queasy.
i’m with you on er- why is that show still on? and why is every promo “the most shocking episode of er ever”.
What! You saw Titanic?! We were working together at the store when that was in the theatre, and you vowed you’d never see it. I’ve always wondered what you would have thought of it…I guess still do.
Yes, the Grey’s Anatomy is a good show. Big, big fan!
