Last night, after Ryan had successfully presented his presentation and after I had successfully completed my work day and evening-class exam, we found ourselves sitting on the couch with the kids watching Because of Winn Dixie. I wasn’t particularly excited about the movie, just excited about sitting with my entire little family after what has already seemed like a grueling week.
Sometime around November 2004 I reached my threshold for kid movies. Most left me with an overwhelming urge to beat my head against a brick wall. If you happen to invite me to watch another movie about talking animals and their identity problems, I’m going to have to ask you to never speak to me again. It’s too hard to listen to you while I’m beating my head against the brick.
But this movie last night was………..good. Really good. It had a lot of good messages and good music and why didn’t anybody mention that DAVE MATTHEWS is in the movie, for crying out loud? How hard would it have been to call it Because of Winn Dixie featuring Dave Matthews? I just typed it and it wasn’t hard at all!
So, anyway, the story is that all these good things start happening to this lonely little girl because of her dog she found at the Winn Dixie grocery store, and consequently named it the same. And it got me to thinking about life and friendship and family and forgiveness and giving people a chance and reaching outside of yourself and overcoming grief and living life in the moment and I drifted to sleep last night knowing that all these things are lessons I too am learning.
But, for me, it was all Because of Super Target.
