Fatigue is kind of a pretty word when you think about it

May 23rd, 2006

I have been looking at everything today in terms of, “Can I lay my head down on this and sleep for a while?”  Unfortunately, the answer is ususally no for either practical or ethical reasons.

Tuesdays are usually slumpy anyway, but today I am having an especially hard time with simple tasks like sentence formation and zipping up my pants.  I can tell that there is a list forming in the deep archives of my mind called, “Things I Miss About My Youth”.  It’s currently a short list, beginning with “smooth stomach skin”, and quickly followed by “energy”.

I used to have boundless energy.  Four hours of sleep per night was more than enough.  I could stay up all night with nary a yawn to slow me down the next day.  I loved late night TV and all-night drive-thrus.  Now, at around 8:30 p.m. every night, I start planning the quickest route to bed.  I rarely stay up past 10:45 p.m. without passing out.

Friday night James and DeDe came over and we stayed up talking until 3:30 a.m..  It was a good talk, and well worth the residual exhaustion.  We covered a range of topics, including the long and painful story I call What Happened In High School, which actually felt pretty theraputic for the first time in a long time.  James and DeDe, if you read this, I hope you have recovered better than I.

I am tempted to visit the nearby Maverik and purchase a Red Bull from one of the colorful members of the Maverik motley crew, but the Red Bull high is only temporary.  What I need is a slow-drip Red Bull IV.

For now, I think I will just prop my eyelids open with toothpicks like I saw on Tom and Jerry once.

I was so proud of myself for going to bed by 11:15 last night that I snoozed through my 7 am work-out and didn’t get up until 8. Yet I still opted for a diet coke to help me through the long and tedious afternoon hours. I am afraid my “Things I Miss About My Youth” list is getting longer by the day……..

Alas, I was not blessed with the ability to sleep….very much. Even in adulthood, I am unable to hit the sack before 11 PM. If I do, I know that I will be WIDE awake at 1:30. Take last night. We had our company softball game (we lost, 32-19) which got over at 10 PM. I got home at exactly 10:30. I watched most of Leno, ate a Big Cherry and 2 pieces of bread, read my scriptures, and then went to bed….sometime between 11 and 12. Then, at promptly 4:54 this morning, my body decided that it had had enough sleep. I was sitting here at my desk by “0600 hours” as they say in the army.

I’m glad you get good sleep. Consider it a blessing. You have 2 full-time jobs and need the rest more than most!
