I’m here for you, Britney

May 22nd, 2006

I have resisted making a comment about this, but this morning I heard FOR THE THIRD TIME a news report about Britney Spears almost dropping her baby as she walked out of a hotel and tripped on her long pants.

Apparently the American people are not concerned enough with, say, the war in Iraq or the energy crisis, or the president’s phone tapping, because actual bona fide news organizations are feeding us stories about Britney Spears ALMOST dropping her baby.

First of all, get off the poor girl’s back.  She may have terrible taste in men and plastic jumpsuits, but how can you criticize someone for stumbling and almost falling down???  I can’t think of anything more cruel to do to a new mother than criticize her care of her children, let alone her near-misses.

Guess what?  Today, I was almost late to work, because I almost forgot to get up, and I almost backed out of the driveway without raising the garage door, before almost running over little kids who were almost outside playing.  I almost ran into the back of a teal Dodge on my way to work because I was almost still asleep, but luckily I was listening to a news report that was almost over about how Britney Spears almost dropped her baby, and the horror of hearing it almost sent me through the sunroof.  I was almost too late, and I almost slammed on the gas instead of the brakes, but alas, I hit the brakes and disaster was spared again.  I wonder if I should let the evening news know.

What is wrong with the world?  Why, oh why, are we getting bombarded with this kind of “news coverage” when there are real, honest-to-goodness, affect-your-life events going on out there?  Like the birth of Brangelina’s baby, for example.
